Sola House

Sola House

A courtyard at the centre

Sola House is organised around a single north-facing courtyard. Every primary room opens to it, so the plan borrows light and outlook from the middle of the site rather than pushing all the glass to the boundary.

Materials

  • Off-form concrete to the ground plane and spine wall

  • Blackbutt battens, oiled rather than stained

  • Anodised aluminium in a warm bronze

Orientation

Living rooms face north across the courtyard; bedrooms sit to the south, where the light stays even all day.

What we set out to do

A house that feels calm on a hot afternoon. Deep eaves, cross-ventilation and a slab that holds the cool — everything else followed from that.
